| Could the number '666.' at Rev 13.18, be pointing at the jewish bible? There are - last time I counted anyway - 5 books in the Torah, 21 in the Prophets, and 13 in the Writings, for a sum of 39. However, if one counts Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles as one book apiece, we now have 36 books in the jewish bible. The sum of 1 thru 36 is 666. So could 666 be pointing at the jewish bible?
Incidentally, the sum of the mirror-reversed numbers from 1 thru 24 ( the double digits are reversed, i.e. 21 instead of 12, 42 instead of 24, etc.) is 613, the number of the jewish commandments. |

| Hi Spinky: Welcome to our forum! I would say "No" and here's why: Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of "a man"; and his number is (666) Six hundred threescore and six. _____________ God bless Ed J ( Joshua 22:34) http://www.holycitybiblecode.org |

| Ed J:
You're probably right; it's hard to get around that text. Isaac Asimov in his Guide to the Bible thought probably, to the christians of the time, it probably denoted Domitian rather than Nero. But he proposed the significance of the number 666 more generally, in the sense that it is the number of a man because it falls short 3X of the perfection of 777. My own thought was that perhaps 666 was intended as a perjorative, not as a denotative. That is, the main persecutors of christians for a while were the jews, and so to the author of Revelation, jews were antichrist, rather than 'the' antichrist. But I don't think he intended to imply that a man of the future, who would be a jew, would be 'the' antichrist. So who knows what he thought? He probably could have written a good zombie movie, though. Incidentally, when I checked my calculation of the sequence of mirror reversed numbers from 1 thru 24, I got 315 this time. That really spoiled my triumph. |

| Here is another idea I had about 666. However, I do not tend to credit John with prophetic ability, and one might interpret his writings as the productions of a stir-crazy religious enthusiast. For example, his beast, that combines the features of a leopard, a bear, and a lion Rev 13.2 conflates the features of Daniel's first three beasts Dan 7.4-6, whereas it was the fourthbeast that was "fearsome, dreadful, and very powerful." Dan 7.7 So I do not think that John knew the jewish scriptures very well -it appears that he was not a scholar. Anyway, my idea, which is not very scholarly either, is that if you wrote 666 in Roman letters as three 6s, you would have VI VI VI, which may suggest that the beast has three features - perhaps John intended to mean the beast was the antithesis of the Holy Trinity, not that I care much what John meant. If 666 means six hundred and sixty-six, then it might be better to say it is the number of the beasts. Or maybe John meant to say it is the number of the bees. Perhaps he was the Beeman of Patmos. |
