This post/thread attempts to give a very thorough definition of gematria...

The word 'gematria' comes from the Greek 'geōmetriā' from which our English word 'geometry' is derived. In Spanish, 'geometry' is also spelled 'geometria'.

Concise Oxford English Dictionary
gematria /gɪˈmeɪtrɪə/ (noun) a Kabbalistic method of interpreting the Hebrew scriptures by computing the numerical value of words, based on the values of their constituent letters. – origin C17: from Aramaic gīmaṭrĕyā, from Gk gēometria (see geometry).

Gematria: the geometry of the language which includes:

1. The geometrical shapes/hieroglyphics of the alphabet and their symbolism, i.e. S - Snake, Serpent, Symbol, Sign, Start, Smart, She, Sin, Son.

2. 'Step 1' of counting the number of letters in a name/word/phrase and that number having symbolic significance, i.e. GOD(3): Holy(4) Trinity(7), Sabbath(7), menorah(7) - seven candles(7), Passover(8 ) & Hanukkah(8 )/Chanukah(8 ) - eight-day(8 ) festival(8 ), Liberty(7) Bell(4) & July 4th, E PLURIBUS UNUM(13) represents the first 13 United States

3. 'Step 2' of the alphanumeric codes/ciphers which make a connection between different names/words/phrases with a similar sum. 'Gematria' is a powerful tool, which can be used with the Hebrew/Aramaic, Greek (isopsephy), Arabic (hisab al-jummal), and English languages; illustrating that through the use of number associations, gematria even crosses languages barriers. Ex. Simple74 English74 Gematria74, Jewish74 menorah74.

"The authors of the New Testament applied gematria - a literary device whereby the sums of certain phrases produce significant sacred numbers - to convey special concepts. The practice of assigning numerical value to words was apparently common in the ancient world. In Hebrew and in Greek there were no separate symbols to represent numbers. In each language, the letters of the alphabet stood for number values, so, inescapably, the values of letters forming each word could be added together to yield a sum called that word's gematria. Certain names, epithets, and phrases of Scripture, both Hebrew and Greek, were carefully constructed so that their gematria would be consistent with the sacred numbers of the classical cosmology - the 'canon of sacred number' derived by the mathematicians of the ancient world. The practice of gematria is like setting lyrics to music; in the Bible and other texts significant phrases were carefully and deliberately set to numbers. Although its existence is not widely known to students of Christian Scipture, the practice of gematria throws new light on the meaning of many passages found in the New Testament... Although the practice of gematria has continued unbroken in Hebrew, and is still used today by Orthodox Jewish rabbis, the use of numbers in interpreting the meaning of Christianity's sacred texts was anathemized by Iranaeus and other prominent Church fathers in the second and third centuries, and with the suppression of the Gnostic heresies, the practice of any kind of 'numbers theology' apparently ceased. As Christianity spread to Western Europe, the lingua franca became Latin rather than Koine, the form of Greek spoken and written in the eastern Mediterranean in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Near the end of the 4th century, Saint Jerome translated the Greek Scriptures into Latin, with the direct result that every trace of the gematria in the original Koine was lost. Given modern tools for computation and cross-referencing, this long-neglected interpretive practice needs to be examined for the remarkable new light it throws upon the faith of the earliest Christians. It appears that the 'orthodox' were in many cases the heretics!" - Magdalene's Lost Legacy p. 2-3, by Margaret Starbird (Bear & Co., 2003)

"Other often-discussed 'codes' in the Bible relate to gematria, a method of Torah analysis that assigns number values to letters, adds them up and interprets the results." - Codebreaker - The History of Secret Communication, p. 29, by Stephen Pincock (Metro Books, 2011)

"Gematria is the name given to a method of figuring hidden meanings from the geometric shapes of letters and from the numerical values of both words and phrases". - The Secret Science of Numerology - The Hidden Meaning of Numbers and Letters p.56, by Shirley Blackwell Lawrence (New Page Books, 2001)

"Gematria - an occult* method of turning words or phrases into a numerical equivalent by assigning numbers to letters. It was used by practioners of the Kaballa, for whom Hebrew words or phrases with the same numerical total are said to be symbolically related. For example, the Hebrew word 'Messiah' consisting of the four letters m-sh-i-ch totals 358, as does the word 'nachash' n-ch-sh which means the brass serpent of Moses. Some Christian Kaballists in the Middle Ages, therefore believed that the image of the brass serpent was a prefiguration of Christ on the Cross and, as a result, in medieval iconography Christ is sometimes depicted as a serpent entwined around a crucifix. PostSubject: Sabbath(7 letters)/Shabbat(7) on seventh(7) day   Gematria (def.): the geometry of the language Empty6/5/2013, 01:00

It's no 'coincidence' that Sabbath(7 letters) / Shabbat(7) is observed on the seventh(7) day. Simply counting the number of letters(7) in a word/name/phrase and giving it symbolic meaning is Step 1 of any language's gematria and is most strong in English(7).

The spirit of the Sabbath is for us all to recognize GOD the Creator(7) - YHWH/Yehowah(7) - and this present(7) of our present life. One's regular(7) job should have the Sabbath off, but if one is a pastor, church music director, and even secular(7) jobs that focus on the weekend(7), GOD/God understands.

The observance of the 4 phases of the lunar month being app. 7 days (7.4 days) each is where the Genasis(7) story of creation in 6 days + resting(7) on the 7th day came from.

"Anytime(7) a concept(7) is connect(7)ed to nature, it's not only logical(7) - it was inevitable."
