Why are there four Gospels in the Christian Canon? According to Irenaeus (Late 2nd Century), the proto-Orthodox father who officialised the selection of the four Gospels we know today, there are four corners of the earth, four pillars upon which the earth rests and Cherubim have four heads.

I've read some Irenaeus before, but I need to google him and research this statement of Sherlock's. Huh, Sherlock & Watson!

Yes, interesting that there are four gospels. Just as the fourth word in Genesis 1:1 is "et" spelled aleph-tav. Also seven words in verse 1. I believe that the number four similar to other numbers like 3 has to do with putting things into a manifested form and often relates to the earth.

The 4 letter Name of God.

The 4 gospels.

The 4 faced creatures.

The 4 divisions of the encampments in the wilderness.

4 Colors of fabric used in the tabernacle.

4 seasons.

4 watches in the night.

4th day the sun, moon and stars appear with 4 stated purposes. Signs, seasons, days and years.

4th commandment dealing with how to set apart time.

4 forces. Gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear force.

4 Building blocks. adenine thymine cytosine guanine.

4th letter of the Hebrew alephbet is the dalet with a numerical value of 4 and the ancient meaning of door.

There's probably a lot more that I'm not thinking of at the moment.

I heard that Matthew was written more to show Jesus as King the Jewish Messiah. (Disciple)
Mark- I think was the first written ...not a disciple ...
Luke -Gentile gathered the information
John-(Disciple) This had different information than the others ( which are called the synoptic gospels.)

This was the way God wanted it 4 gospels.

Does anyone know more???

There are thousands of commentaries and hundreds of translations. The KJV is the closest to the original scrolls. Get a Strongs Concordance and look up the Greek and Hebrew. The Holy Spirit will lead and guide you into all truth. JEsus is the Word, his word is not confusing but man is corrupting it with its many translations and commentaries. Stay true to the KJV. If you have doubts about the KJV research the history of the KJV. You may find that many died that we might have the written word. In modern times you will not find any persecution for translating etc. But you will find a money trail. Seek and you will find. Stay true to God, the Lord Jesus Christ He will guide you. Be blessed.

The 4th Book of the Bible is Numbers and four has 4 letters - the only numeral (in English) to do so.
